Canada routed by Venezuela in Americas Baseball Olympic Qualifier
WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. – Carlos Perez and Juniel Querecuto hit home runs and the Venezuelan pitchers combined a hit in a 5-0 win over Canada on Wednesday in Baseball Americas’ Olympic qualifying.
Both teams had already qualified for the weekend’s Super Round at the event. However, preliminary results against other Super Round teams are postponed, giving Venezuela an advantage over Canada in the battle for a playoff berth at the upcoming Tokyo Games.
Perez led Venezuela (3-0) with three hits, including a two-run homer in the fourth inning.
Jacob Robson scored a single in the first inning for Canada’s only hit of the game.
“We came out flat, what can you say,” said Canada manager Ernie Whitt. “We had a few opportunities, but we weren’t able to take advantage of them.
“We will take tomorrow (off) and be ready to play when the crossover matches start on Friday.”
Oddanier Mosqueda took victory for Venezuela, while Travis Seabrooke suffered loss for Canada (2-1) after allowing three hits and two earned runs in two innings.
Venezuela opened the scoring with two runs late in the second set. Simple form Ramon Flores scored Robinson Chironos, then Yonny Hernandez’s single scored Perez.
Perez doubled Venezuela’s lead in the fourth quarter when he turned to the far left after a walk towards Chironos.
Querecuto topped the scoring with a solo homerun in the seventh.
Venezuelan starter Enmanuel De Jesus pitched four innings, allowing one hit and three walks while striking out three.
Hernandez, Harold Chironos and Henry Centeno then combined for five clean innings, striking out eight and walking only one.
Venezuela and Canada will each face the United States and the Dominican Republic in the Super Round. Canada will face the United States on Friday and the Dominican Republic on Saturday.
The Dominican Republic qualified for the Super Round with a 13-3 loss to Nicaragua on Wednesday. The United States will win over the Dominicans in the next round.
The team with the best Super Round record will be declared the winner and qualify for Tokyo. The second and third finalists will face off in a last-ditch qualifier for the sixth and final Olympic Games.
