Grande Prairie records 68 new cases of COVID-19 in past seven days

Across the province, hospitalizations rose by 63 over the past week to 1,053, while the number of COVID-19 patients in intensive care rose slightly by four to 48.

In the North zone, 108 people are hospitalized, two are in intensive care.

Last week, 38 COVID-19 related deaths were reported in Alberta. This brings the death toll from COVID-19 in Alberta to 4,141.

Full details and COVID-19 numbers can be found on the province’s website.

Although there has been an increase in hospitalizations related to COVID-19, Health Minister Jason Copping says this is not surprising due to the transmissibility of the BA2 variant.

“Virus levels in sewage are trending up in Calgary and Edmonton and in many, but not all, smaller centers being monitored,” he explained.

“We are seeing more virus circulating than in other provinces. This is not surprising given the transmissibility of BA2 and the increase in contact with people resuming their normal routines. So far, we see no significant impact in terms of serious consequences. We may see further increases in the coming weeks, but we are prepared for it. »

In addition to the immunity acquired through vaccination and recent exposure to Omicron, they do not expect the healthcare system to be hit as hard as previous waves.
