Prairie Mountain Health announces new CEO
The Prairie Mountain Health (PMH) Board of Directors is pleased to announce that Brian Schoonbaert has been appointed the new Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Regional Health Authority.
Schoonbaert steps into the post following the retirement of current CEO Penny Gilson’s on May 31 after nine years at the helm of PMH.
Schoonbaert is no stranger to the region as he was the former CEO of the Brandon Regional Health Authority (BRHA) before the provincial health authority mergers in 2012 combined the BRHA with the RHAs of Assiniboine and Parkland.
“I look forward to reconnecting with the region. I have been working with the Transformation Office for two and a half years, so I can’t wait to return to work at PMH, ”he says. “I think there are still a lot of the same players in place. I will be able to recognize a lot of faces as I walk around the area and, of course, people from the communities, and I think I already have a pretty good idea of what is going on in the area.
As another summer of COVID and restrictions approaches, Schoonbaert believes PMH residents are not fully aware of the impact the pandemic is having on our hospital staff in the region.
“We have to get through the rest of the pandemic and we all know the staff are tired. They worked very, very hard, ”he explains,“ and I think we need to get our feet wet after most of the situation is over. “
Schoonbaert says he is excited about the opportunity to join the dynamic organization of PMH.
“I look forward to reconnecting and re-engaging with PMH staff after my secondment to the Transformation Management Office (TMO). I enter this new role knowing that I am not fulfilling it alone, but rather alongside an incredible team of 7,500 people who, like me, are dedicated and committed to providing quality health services to the residents of PMH.
The Board listed Schoonbaert’s many accomplishments during his career in their most recent press release welcoming him to his new position. “ Since 2018, Schoonbaert participates and leads several projects related to the provincial office of transformation management. From 2012 to 2018, he was PMH’s Vice President of Finance, (Chief Financial Officer), Capital Support Services and Chief Operating Officer of the Brandon Regional Health Center. He served as Vice President of Finance and Information Services from 1994 to 2011 for Brandon General Hospital and BRHA. Schoonbaert also holds a Bachelor of Commerce (Honors) and CPA (Chartered Accountant) designation.
The PMH Board of Directors expressed sincere thanks and appreciation for Gilson’s commitment, dedication and strong leadership as the CEO of the health region over the past 9 years. On behalf of the management and staff, the Board wished him well during his retirement.
