Shapovalov tests positive for COVID-19 upon arrival for ATP Cup – KXAN Austin
SYDNEY (AP) – Canada’s Denis Shapovalov has announced he tested positive for COVID-19 after arriving in Sydney for the ATP Cup.
The 22-year-old is one of the first foreign players to arrive in Australia and is part of Canada’s squad for the team tournament in Sydney from January 1-9, ahead of the Australian Open in Melbourne which kicks off. January 17th. .
Shapovalov played at the World Tennis Championship exhibition in Abu Dhabi last week, where he beat Rafael Nadal in the third place playoff match.
Nadal also tested positive for coronavirus after participating in the tournament, as did Tokyo Olympic gold medalist Belinda Bencic and Tunisian Ons Jabeur.
Former world number 10 Shapovalov has said on social media that he is isolated and has only minor symptoms.
“Hello everyone, I just wanted to let you know that when I arrived in Sydney I tested positive for COVID,” Shapovalov said. “I follow all protocols, including seclusion and informing people I have been in contact with.
“Right now I’m experiencing minor symptoms and can’t wait to get back on the pitch when it’s safe.”
All players must return negative tests 72 hours before flying to Australia, as well as undergo testing once in the country and self-isolate while awaiting results.
