The Island Walk: New Long-Distance Walking Adventure Invites Travelers to Explore Prince Edward Island on Foot

435-mile walking route passes through endless beaches, charming little towns and more

With miles of endless beaches, charming little towns and vast acres of farmland, Prince Edward Island enjoys a surprisingly diverse landscape. Travelers can now tour Canada’s smallest province, also known as the country’s gastronomic island, on foot with The island promenade, an approximately 435 mile walking route that circles Prince Edward Island.

Ideal for both seasoned hikers and casual walkers, The Island Walk runs along the outer perimeter of PEI. Featuring a mix of inland and coastal sections, the route crosses the ocean, much of the Confederation Trail, red dirt roads, beaches and quiet streets inviting walkers to explore both ends of the trail. island at North Cape and East Point.

The entire route takes about 32 days, walking 12 to 15 miles per day. It has 32 sections, which leaves plenty of opportunities to end the island walk in sections and more time to explore specific areas of the island. Minimal equipment is necessary to complete this course (sneakers and small backpack).

“Much like the Camino de Santiago, the Island Walk will give you time to slow down and be present in your thoughts and your daily journey, while discovering the simple beauty of the island around you,” said Bryson Guptill , creator of Island Walk.

The Island Walk passes through Prince Edward Island’s two major cities, Charlottetown and Summerside, and many smaller communities allowing participants to immerse themselves in the Island’s culinary and arts scene, as well as than meeting the locals. Along the route, many hostels and partner hotels offer transfer services to deliver luggage when changing accommodation.

Culture and gastronomy along the trail

A short detour from the trail is the community of Tyne Valley, famous for its annual oyster festival, Rock the Boat music festival, and burgers. The community also has an oyster bar, a tea room and a small grocery store to stock up on essentials. Trail location: Waypoints 12-13 Portage to Notham 20 km

In Montague, beer lovers will find two local craft breweries with spectacular water views – Bogside Brewing and Copper Bottom Brewing. Trail location: waypoints 26-27 | Cardigan – Montague 12 km

Located on the south shore of PEI, Victoria-by-the-Sea serves up the charm, history and local flavors of the Maritimes. A seaside lunch awaits hungry travelers at The Lobster Barn (the lobster roll is famous) followed by dessert at Island Chocolates for hand-made delicacies. Visitors can also catch a performance at the historic Victoria Playhouse, Prince Edward Island’s oldest “little theater”. Trail location: Waypoint 1-2 | Dunedin – Victoria 24km

In the heart of one of the island’s most productive potato growing regions is O’Leary, home to the Canadian Potato Museum. At the museum, visitors can take a self-guided tour to learn about the history and culture of the potato, and examine the vast collection of ancient machines. Trail location: Waypoints 7-8 O’Leary – Miminegash 19 km
